Episode 38: Not Dead Yet...

Tranquil Wash Outpost: Deep Ocean “You don’t have to do this, Sepher.” “I’m aware of that, Captain. Now get out of here!” Sionis Sepher stood alone. The underwater cave was filled with naga, all of them coming to kill him. As the last of the human refugees disappeared through the small cave opening Sionis knew that the time had come. The magi of the Kirin Tor had warned against unleashing total arcane energy a million times over. Honestly, Sionis had decided that they were just too terrified to even consider the millions of possibilities that might unfold. After all, arcane energy was completely unstable and had, on many occasions, led to terrifying destruction. Of course, terrifying destruction was exactly what Sionis was looking for in this situation. As the first Naga reached striking distance Sionis stepped forward and turned his body into a conduit to the magical energies of the world. Suddenly, the dark damp cave exploded with waves of fire. The heat caused the moisture to evapor...

Episode 37: Burn the House Down

Tranquil Wash Outpost, Deep Ocean The cave system of Tranquil Wash was filled with injured and broken soldiers by the time Captain Taylor and I came out of the water. For me, seeing how quickly things had gone sour only made getting rescued a higher priority. “The balloons will take us to the surface, but what about coming back down?” I asked. “They can be pulled back down, but the distance is longer than you’d think. It’s likely that this is a one way trip. The first individual we’re sending up will have a flare gun to signal any ships nearby and then to give us a signal. One pull means no ships; three pulls mean there are ships.” “If there are no ships?” “That individual stays up there and hopes to find us one. Meanwhile, the rest of us defend this outpost until we’re all dead.” “Who’s up first?” “A little night elf girl volunteered,” Taylor said. “She’s light and the elves can handle pressure changes better than humans can. She’ll be a great one to send up.” “Alright,” I r...

Episode 36: The Unending Push

Tranquil Wash Outpost, Deep Ocean The freedom that Captain Taylor received was quickly put to good use. Upon leaving Nespirah’s shell the human commander organized his squads, helped to rearm those he could, and put together what he believed would be an excellent force to keep pushing against the naga. I, on the other hand, was not really sure what was being done to ensure survival. The Earthen brothers had become bent on finding out what was happening with Neptulon, another one of their enormous creatures that was feared all over Azeroth for the devastation it could cause if someone made it angry enough. In reality, I understood what everyone was concerned about. The naga had attacked pretty much out of the blue, and their direct connection with danger and devastation for all of Azeroth no doubt put a large group of people on the defensive now that they were dealing directly with the snake-like water creatures. Still, nearly two weeks in on the devastating shipwreck and no one seeme...

Episode 35: Nespirah's Shell

There had been a lot going on for the survivors since we had ended up in this underwater realm. By the time we reached Silver Tide Hollow we were the last survivors to report in since the massacre on the surface. Many of the others were reunited with friends they had long since thought dead. Each ship had at least a few survivors among them and it seemed that thanks to Erunak, the Briny Cutter's crew had been one of the luckiest groups as far as survival rate. I had learned that over thirty specialized shaman had been sent on the mission and now only twelve survived, including Gadra and Erunak. Meanwhile, I had adapted to the environment fairly well by keeping myself busy with the usual gathering of supplies for the growing numbers of survivors that flocked to the cave’s safety. Still, I would be lying if I said I didn't long for the day that we would finally be free of the ocean lifestyle. I wanted to get back to the surface and pick up the pieces of the world we had left b...

Episode 34: Zin'Jatar

I hadn’t expected our task to be easy, but for some reason the naga seemed to be holding back on their advance. Erunak felt discomforted by the inaction, and soon I felt a wave of fear and confusion, but it wasn’t coming from Erunak, it was coming from the other shaman, that Erunak had called Gadra. Something had happened Gadra and he was in danger. I felt like time was of the essence and I knew it was worth the risk. I reached out and grabbed Erunak’s arm and then focused my energy for a quick teleportation. I locked on Gadra’s fear, the energy that he was using to broadcast that fear, and when I felt a small flicker of it, I slammed us back down to the real world. We snapped out of the teleportation in the damp and poorly lit chamber that Gadra had used for refuge. It was, unfortunately, anything but calm. Metal clanking against metal echoed all around the cave and I realized that we were under attack. The survivors, the ex-prisoners, and even Gadra were defending this small posit...

Episode 33: Pressing Forward

The water was always cold. Still, we had an almost endless supply of firewood to stay warm. A diver would swim out and fetch broken boxes, torn sails, or anything that looked like it may burn, and they’d bring it back to the cave so that I could pull the water molecules out. The dried materials would burned easily after that. Meanwhile, Erunak was careful to pull fresh air down the long pathway up to the surface, supplying us with a warm breeze that helped to put our minds at ease. We were seven days into our underwater stay and I was starting to get tired of the repetitive activities. I had just started to wonder if I should venture out for the daily supply of crab meat when I heard something thrash in the water near the cavern’s entrance. “More naga?” I asked as he turned toward Erunak. “No,” the shaman replied. “A soldier.” I turned to get a better look and saw several of the survivors helping pull the soldier out of the water and over to the warmth of the nearby fire. He look...

Episode 32: Lost at Sea

There had been conversations during my dreams that I did not understand. Many of them had been panicked and frightful, while others seemed almost sedated. The voices came and went, some male and other female, but always there was one individual that sounded the same, time and time again. It was like this for an eternity before I finally felt myself wake in one twisting moment of clairvoyance. I opened my eyes and saw only that I was in a poorly lit tomb. I was resting in a fairly dry spot, but my feet were resting in a pool of water. I lifted my head and saw that the tomb was not a tomb at all. I was inside of a ship’s hull. The ship had capsized. I started to remember now, the tentacles, the naga, and the Briny Cutter’s fate. It was hard to try and take it all in so I stopped thinking for a moment, tried to separate the events into smaller pieces that I could manage. Thinking of it, I must have looked like a fool as I ran through the memories, shaking my head and speaking to myself...

Episode 31: The Ocean Blue

Image
The Briny Cutter was a rather large vessel as far as I could tell. It was a mercenary ship, paid for by the King of Stormwind to carry troops to the newly formed island. Young soldiers, younger than me anyway, were standing in their armor and lined up to board the ship. At the head of the group, I caught sight of a recognizable face. “Captain Taylor,” I said as I grabbed the soldier by his shoulder plate. “It’s Sionis.” The human turned and gave a big smile. “Sionis Sepher! I haven’t heard from you in years!” “It’s been a while,” I replied. “How are things with you?” Taylor asked. I thought about trying to track the events, to cover the story of my last few years, but there seemed to be no simple story, no easy way to explain, so I simply shook my head in response. “Too much to tell you now.” “What brings you out here anyway? Did you hear I was in town and come to visit?” “Actually, I’m coming with you.” “You are?” “Yes, it’s my duty to report for military action in a time of...
