Episode 10: Fjord on Fire

Image
The trip back to the Howling Fjord had been a little easier this time. The Kirin Tor representative in Valiance Keep had transported me there without question, further proof that I was gaining some admiration amongst the magi. One step closer to my ultimate goal. The local inn was still blistering cold when I arrived here again and I couldn’t help but smile to feel a sense of returning home. I took my place at the bar and ordered a fresh glass of spring water. The bartendered responded by throwing down a bottle of mostly ice. “Sorry about that,” he said looking it over. “I can’t keep it warm enough to stay liquid.” “Don’t worry,” I said with a smile. “This works just fine.” “Good on you,” the bartender said. “I wish my other customers were so kind.” I leaned back and started to sip at my nearly frozen water when I heard the door to the inn swing open and the thud of a heavy boot stepped inside. I glanced over my shoulder and saw Admiral Keller entering. Where Amber Ledge had be...

Episode 9: Parting Ways

Image
The days following the success at the Nexus were a blur. The magi at Amber Ledge forced me to stay bedridden while Lady Evanor tended to what turned out to be several broken bones and torn muscles. Health potions and mana draughts were daily items for me to drink. Thomas and Kekel left for fizzcrank airstrip without another word to me. They got handsome rewards, but I imagine they wouldn’t want to deal with the Kirin Tor again any time soon. Sure, the rift had been sealed, but another crazy magic wielding sorcerer would eventually reopen it. I doubt they felt like they had really achieved any kind of victory and nearly dying always came with reflective thoughts on how one had lived their lives. I couldn’t blame them for wanting to get away. Still, four days into my recovery and I decided I had enough. When Lady Evanor tried to stop me at the entrance to the tower, I was certain that it was to congratulate me for my efforts. “Hello there,” I said casually as she stopped him in his...

Episode 8: The Nexus (Part Two)

“Welcome to the Nexus,” Donathan said as he stepped off his red dragon. “This is our biggest battleground.” “Why is that?” Appoleon asked. “I thought Arthas was the main target.” “He was…until this started.” “So what’s going on in there?” I asked as I tightened my regalia. “What’s this rift I’m supposed to close?” “It’s almost at the center of the nexus. It’s growing exponentially and we can’t find a way to seal it.” “Then what are we going to do?” “You’re going to stabilize it and prevent it from getting any worse.” “Stabilize it? How are we supposed to do that?” “I don’t know Sionis, that’s for you to figure out once you’re in there.” “Of course it is,” I replied with a roll of my eyes. Typical Kirin Tor nonsense. “Oh, and Sionis, there is a red dragon within the Nexus named Keristrasza. Evanor wanted to believe that the beast could be saved, but we haven’t heard anything in weeks. If you find the dragon in there, please release her from the torture she is no doubt being p...

Episode 7: The Nexus (Part One)

The frozen morning air always seeped into the poorly-insulated inns built across Northrend. Each and every morning as the fires from the night before finally faded into a thin smoke, I would feel the biting cold take hold of my feet, pulling me from my dreams and reminding me that I was not in the safe and secure city of Stormwind. Lately, my dreams had been rooted in the human capital where I relived countless memories of my brief but powerful life with Keaira. The Night Elf had called him partner for six years on the day she came to him with the news of her departure. It had been a brisk winter day in the city when she’d said her peace on the matter. This was probably why the dreams had returned now, the cold being a reminder of that painful moment in time. Still, I hadn’t expected the pain to cut so deep. Nearly a year had now gone, but whenever that dream retreated and I woke from my slumber, the pain felt fresh and new. I think I’d stayed in this wonderful little outpost for a...

Episode 6: Fizzcrank Airstrip

Image
I had successfully wasted a full week in Northrend before I started to lose the confidence that I was on a quick errand. The adventure with the murlocs had been unique to say the least, but it had done nothing to further the cause of the fight against Prince Arthas or achieve my own personal goal of reaching Dalaran. Fortunately, I soon found Fizzcrank Airstrip. Airplanes! What a wonderful discovery. It only made sense that I would use one of these marvelous creations to fly my way to the magical city. I was certain that one of these engineers would be happy to help me out, so I marched right in ready to go. “Welcome to Fizzcrank!” one of the small engineers said as I cleared the threshold of the main building. “Did you walk all this way from the harbor?” “Actually, yes,” I said casually, trying to not sound exhausted. “I just had some mage business to deal with at Amber Ledge.” “Makes sense, I guess,” the engineer replied. “So what brings you here?” “Air travel, of course,” I s...

Episode 5: The Misguided Murloc King

Image
Two days after leaving Amber Ledge, I was seriously starting to regret my decision to avoid the roads. I worried that some of the Kirin Tor might be eager to seek me out once the excitement of Evanor’s return faded, so I had opted, instead, to follow the water’s shoreline. It had seemed like a wise idea at the time, and for my horse, Surfal, this was a nice way to stay hydrated. Still, there had been little in the way of social interaction since we had departed. According to the latest maps, the gnome checkpoint in the north would have warm meals and soft beds. They also had an airstrip. All of that seemed a long way away now. In the distance I could hear the roar of a waterfall, which meant I would find the ramp that the Alliance had built leading back up for the main road just a little further ahead. From there I would be able to follow the road and find the airstrip. I spurred Surfal on and the horse reluctantly picked up speed until we reached the waterfall and the large pond t...

Episode 4: The Magi at Amber Ledge - Part Two

The fractured key remained fractured six hours later as a very confused looking Donathan tried spell after spell to bind the materials. He had long ago determined that the explosion had not damaged the key, but instead some kind of action that the Mistress had taken just before her demise. “Are we certain we can’t get to Evanor without the key?” he asked me. I could only shrug. “The prison chambers were up on floating platforms. I need to fly up there if I’m going to get to them. Since they’re on floating platforms, I figure they’re guarded with magical keys too. Can’t you just fuse it together?” “Were it so easy,” Donathan grumbled. “This is dark magic and I’m not certain I can fix it at all.” “We have to assume that same dark magic is what’s keeping Evanor contained,” I added. “If we can’t repair the key, then we’re not likely to pick whatever lock they’re using either.” “I’m aware of that, Sepher. There is only one other that we can turn to,” Donathan said as he scooped up th...

Episode 3: The Magi at Amber Ledge - Part One

Image
When I finally reached the edge of “Beryl Point” I nearly ran right into a passing guard of the blue dragonkin. Dragonkin are creatures that look humanoid from the waist up, but dragon from the waist down. Their strange stature and terrifying faces make them more than intimidating to look at, but I knew that my fire spells would quickly deal with anything they might throw at me. The Night Elf that had shown me this far, however, didn’t seem so confident. He quickly backed off, remembering that he had to reach the next Alliance checkpoint by sunset. Alone now, I sat with the magical device that Donathan had prepared for me to use on the force field around the prisoner area. From all that I could see, Donathan had actually just given me a standard Alliance bomb, complete with wax-coated wick and thin pumice shell. On the inside? I imagine it was crammed with gunpowder. As rudimentary as it seemed, I figured it would detonate and at least draw the attention of whoever was holding Lady ...

Episode 2: Librarian Donathan

Three days of riding a horse is enough time to make any young man feel like he has been worn out. For me, the experience was worse. By the time I arrived at the top of Amber Ledge, I was feeling like I might not be able to stand upright ever again. Just a short ways ahead of me, I caught sight of the familiar towers that were commonly used by the Kirin Tor. It was also at this moment that I knew I had reached the first important milestone in my mission to Northrend. The Kirin Tor were in charge of Dalaran. It was their city after all. I couldn’t risk becoming an enemy of the Kirin Tor if I wanted to walk the streets of the magical city, but honestly I didn’t have the best relationship with the organization in recent years. During the Third War I had left the Kirin Tor behind. The decision had ultimately saved my life, though it had also cost me dearly. Of course, it had nearly been a decade since the war. The Kirin Tor were not ones to easily forget crimes of the past, and while the ...
